Gaming was
approved in Kansas in 1995. The Iowa and Pottawatomie Tribes
operate in Mayetta and Horton, Kansas. Both are located
near the borders of Nebraska and Missouri. Agriculture is
the leading industry (corn, wheat, and cattle), along with
petroleum and natural gas. There are no fewer than 21 state
parks throughout, and for professional-sports enthusiasts
there is the Kansas City Royals baseball team and the ever
present K.C. Chiefs football team (in Kansas City Missouri).
Both casinos are located in northern Kansas, between Topeka
and Kansas City. Topeka has an abundance of historical sites
and parks, and the Topeka Zoo, which features lions, gorillas,
and orangutans in a rain forest-like environment, is worthy
of a special trip. Hot air balloon enthusiasts can enjoy
the Huff ‘n’ Puff Balloon Rally in September. For additional
visitor information, call 800-235-1030. Kansas City also
offers its share of history and culture. For information,
call 913-3215800. The Woodlands Race Track has through bred
and quarter horse racing from August to November, and Greyhound
racing all year, Wednesday through Sunday.
When gambling was approved in Kansas in 1995 it was limited
to blackjack, roulette, and poker, but that has been amended
to include craps and slots. |
